Premier League 2013/14 season guide: Part 2

In the second part of our season guide we take a look at the newly promoted Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham and Hull City.

Crystal Palace:
This will be Palace's fifth season in the top flight returning after an eight year absence having beaten Watford 1-0 in the Championship play-off final in May. It could be a season of struggle for Ian Holloway and his men who are already favourites to go straight back down. Holloway will be without top scorer Glenn Murray, who is unlikely to make any sort of return until Christmas time having suffered knee ligament damage in the play-off semi final first leg against Brighton. Having lost Wilfried Zaha as well to Manchester United, eyes turn to Dwight Gayle who signed from Peterborough United for around £4.5 million this summer. The striker scored 13 goals for Posh last season which saw them relegated, so Eagles fans will hope the former non-league forward will settle in the top flight.

As well as Gayle, Holloway has brought in the more experienced Kevin Phillips who signed a one year deal having scored the only goal in the play-off final. As well as Phillips, midfielder Stephen Dobbie has signed a permanent deal having spent the last four months of last season on loan at Selhurst Park. Having seen the likes of Victor Moses, Nathaniel Clyne and Wilfried Zaha rise from the club's academy to better things, Palace fans are hoping for similar things from Jonny Williams who is tipped to be the next big thing. The attacking midfielder featured heavily in the club's success last season and having made two caps for Wales, is one to look out for this year.

Everton:

It's been all change this summer at Goodison Park as Roberto Martinez replaced David Moyes as manager. One of the first things Martinez made clear was that he would get Everton into the Champions League. A big statement and one if he achieves will be quite remarkable. A good start to the season will certainly ease Martinez who saw his Wigan Athletic side relegated from the top flight last season. Despite this he still saw the Lactics win the FA Cup against Manchester City, which also saw them humble Everton 3-0 at Goodison in the quarter finals. So far the Spaniard has drafted in a number of players including three from Wigan. Arouna Kone, Joel Robles and Antolin Alcarez have all been brought in and are joined by the highly rated Gerard Deulofleu who joins on a season long loan from Barcelona. With plenty of arrivals, Evertonians will be hoping they are able to hold onto defender Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini who have both been linked with moves to Old Trafford following in the footsteps of their former manager.

If Martinez is to become a success this season then he has a great opportunity in his opening three fixtures. With trips to Norwich and Cardiff and a home game against West Brom, three wins from three would do no harm at all. A poor start for Martinez though and his first season on Merseyside could end up with a mid table finish, which after successive top six seven finishes in the last two seasons, would be very disappointing for the Goodison Park faithful. Another thing the new manager will have to expect is the rivalry with Liverpool who have finished behind Everton in the last two seasons.

Fulham:
Fulham have become one of the teams who you regularly expect to have an average season and finish mid table. They did this last year finishing in 12th with 43 points. The astute signing of Dimitar Berbatov by Martin Jol last season for £5 million from Manchester United saw the Bulgarian become the spear head for Fulham's attacks scoring a respectable 15 goals. Jol has a small squad but one that contains some good talent. In particular Bryan Ruiz and central defender Brede Hangeland who is going into his seventh season at Craven Cottage. With the arrival of a new owner this summer, Jol should be given funds to further strengthen his squad. So far he has brought in Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenberg for £3million replacing the ever reliable Mark Schwarzer who made the short move to Chelsea. Spanish defender Fernando Amorebieta is also another arrival making the move from Athletic Bilbao and one that will see him partner Hangeland in the back four.

Until the owner finds his feet in England, Fulham fans won't expect much more than a mid table finish with any hopes of a European finish a long way off. The owner Shahid Khan's American football team Jacksonville Jaguars have struggled since he bought them in 2011 so the Fulham faithful will hope he can give Jol money to spend. There is a number of talented youngsters at the club with Alex Kacaniklic in particular as the winger has caught the eye with some good performances in a Fulham shirt last season. Kerim Frei is another winger who like Kacaniklic adds some much needed pace on the wings.

Hull City:

Hull City are back in the Premier League but go back to the final day of the Championship season and you would have questioned whether they really wanted to be here. Leading 2-1 against Cardiff going into stoppage time, Hull had a penalty and a chance to confirm their promotion to the top flight. However having missed the penalty and seen Cardiff equalise with a penalty of their own, Hull had to rely on Watford not winning at home to Leeds. To their relief Watford were beaten and saw Steve Bruce's Hull make their return to the top flight. Bruce's side will be favourites to go down as the newly promoted side, and with a lack of options upfront, have a tough season ahead of them. Things don't get easier for Hull as they face a trip to Chelsea on the opening day of the season followed by a home game against Norwich and then a trip to the Ethiad to face Manchester City.

With limited options in attack, Bruce has bought in Danny Graham from Sunderland on loan. The striker signed for Sunderland in January and failed to hit the net in any of his appearances for The Black Cats. Graham was the sixth player Bruce had signed this summer with other arrivals including goalkeeper Steve Harper and defender Maynor Figueroa. Former Manchester United graduate Robbie Brady is one to look for this season, with the 21 year old having made 13 assists last season from midfield.

FA Cup Quarter Finals: Preview

As the season begins to get to the end, we focus on the quarter finals of the FA Cup this weekend. Only recently we saw the first piece of silverware won this season with Swansea beating Bradford 5-0 in the Capital One Cup final last month. The winners of the four FA Cup games will see them play at Wembley in the semi finals. There are three Championship sides and five Premier League teams battling it out for these places as we preview the four ties.

1# Manchester United v Chelsea

The cup so far has seen the big sides in the Premier League avoid each other up until now. The two teams faced each other in the Capital One Cup this season which saw a cracking game see Chelsea come out winners 5-4 after extra time. Both teams were involved in European action in the week but will both be determined to progress to the semi finals. Chelsea were the winners of the competition last season under Di Matteo beating Liverpool, while United have not won the competition since 2005. Victory for Chelsea would relieve some pressure under interim boss Rafa Benitez but at Old Trafford, a victory will be a massive task for the blues. United will look towards dutch maestro Van Persie for inspiration and goals as he looks to add to his goal tally this season.

Prediction: Man United 2-1 Chelsea

2# Manchester City v Barnsley

Barnsley will look to cause an FA Cup shock as they travel to the English champions. Having had an excellent run in the competition this season, the Championship side will want a repeat of their cup run of 2008 where they beat Chelsea at the same stage. City have had a relatively simple route to the quarter finals this season and will expect to get past their opponents. They will be without Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero but will still be expected to put out a strong side that will aim to repeat the club's success in the competition two seasons ago. As the league looks out of their grasp, Roberto Mancini's only other chance of silverware comes in the cup. The most recent tie between the clubs came in 2004 where City handsomely beat Barnsley 7-1 in the League Cup.

Prediction: Man City 3-0 Barnsley

3# Millwall v Blackburn Rovers

In the all Championship affair, the chance of a semi final place for both clubs will is massive. Had these respected clubs lost their fifth round ties then this hame would have seen non-league Luton host Premier League Arsenal. Instead Millwall produced a professional display to get past Luton while Blackburn were involved in the tie of the round as they beat Arsenal 1-0 at the Emirates. Rovers under Michael Appleton have not won any of their five games in the league since the shock win having lost four and drawn one,. In the only league game between the two this season, Millwall were the winners as they beat Blackburn 2-0 at Ewood Park back in November. 

Prediction: Millwall 2-2 Blackburn

4# Everton v Wigan Athletic

In the opening cup game of the weekend, these two Premier League sides will battle it out for a place at Wembley. In the previous round, Everton needed a replay to dispatch of League One side Oldham, while Wigan comfortably saw of Championship side Huddersfield 4-1. Wigan will play their second game against a Merseyside club this week having played Liverpool at home in the league last Saturday where they were thumped 4-0. Everton going well in the league, reached the semi finals last season, but came out second best as they were beaten by city rivals Liverpool. This is the 18th meeting in all competitions between the clubs. The last time Wigan beat Everton at Goodison Park was back in 2005 when they won 1-0 in a league game. 

Prediction: Everton 2-0 Wigan Athletic

Merseyside derby day madness

Everton v Liverpool is one of the biggest derbies in the Premier League and has given football fans over the world some great moments. With the first Merseyside derby of the season happening on Sunday, we look at the top four stand out moments from past games over the years.

#1 -13/03/12 -Steven Gerrard hat trick at Anfield

Liverpool's captain took centre stage during this game with a sublime hat trick at Anfield. Liverpool had not won a Premier League game in four games up till the derby and a comfortable 3-0 victory gave a much needed boost to the club's season. Gerrard's first goal saw the midfielder delicately chip the ball from the edge of the box with his left foot, evading Everton centre back Phil Jagielka who could only watch helplessly as it hit the net. Gerrard's next goal came soon after half time as he thumped home a Luis Suarez cross from close range. He sealed a fine display and hat trick as Suarez once again laid the ball on late on for Gerrard to net his second ever career hat trick for Liverpool. A memorable display.

#2 -20/10/07 -Tale of two penalties for Liverpool as Everton finish with nine men

Two Dirk Kuyt penalties was enough to take all three points at Goodison Park as ended the game with only nine players on the pitch. It was Everton that were deservedly ahead at the break after Sami Hyypia inexplicably turned the ball into his own net. The previous season had seen Everton stroll to a 3-0 home win in the derby leaving the red side of Merseyside humiliated. Times changed in the second half for Liverpool as they were awarded an early penalty after the break as Tony Hibbert brought down Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. Up stepped Dirk Kuyt who place the ball into the right hand corner to level the scores. Hibbert was subsequently sent off leaving the Toffees a man down. Liverpool were awarded a last ditch penalty in the dying moments of the game as Phil Neville deliberately blocked a Lucas Leiva shot on the line with his arm leaving Kuyt with the responsibility of earning three points. Neville was rightly sent off as Kuyt expertly tucked the penalty away to give Liverpool a hard fought win.

#3 -09/09/06 -Everton 3-0 Liverpool

Everton continued there excellent start to the season as they thumped rivals Liverpool at Goodison Park. It was there first win over their rivals in 2 years leaving the red side of Merseyside humiliated. Tim Cahill gave the hosts an early lead finishing from close range with a side footed effort. Liverpool had a number of chances in the game, but were not as clinical as their opponents. Everton soon doubled their lead as Andy Johnson took advantage of some poor defending from Jamie Carragher to arrow a shot past Pepe Reina. Chances came a plenty in the second half for the visitors but either were off target or were expertly denied by Everton keeper Tim Howard. Everton re-established control of the game nearer the end of the game and Andy Johnson capped a excellent performance by adding his second and the team's third late on. Pepe Reina fumbled a Lee Carsley shot allowing the alert Johnson to nod home. A poor day for the reds.

#4 -16/04/01 -Late McAllister goal takes all three points in Merseyside thriller

One of the greatest Merseyside derbies in the last ten years. The game included a missed penalty, 12 yellow cards and a red card. Five goals were shared between the two clubs in a thriller at Goodison which saw Liverpool come away with all three points. The win for Liverpool ensured a successful double over their rivals, and kept their Champions League qualification hopes still alive. It was the red side of Merseyside that took the lead as Emile Heskey raced away on 4 minutes to clinically score his 21st goal of the season. Despite their lead, Liverpool looked edgy and poor defending on the stroke of half time gave Everton an equaliser. A mix up between Stephane Henchoz and Jamie Carragher allowed Duncan Ferguson to power home a left footed strike. Having been pegged back, Liverpool took the initiative after the break as they regained the lead.

A wonderful through ball from Didi Hamann released Robbie Fowler whose ball across the six yard box was struck home by defender Markus Babbel. Fowler was once again involved moments later as he was given the chance to close the game for the visitors. Having been fouled in the box, Fowler stepped up for the penalty only to see his effort strike the inside of the post and roll away. The final third of the game continued at an astounding pace. Igor Biscan was sent off having received a second yellow card after fouling David Unsworth and moments after, Everton were given the chance to once again pull the game level. Sami Hyypia was adjudged to have fouled Duncan Ferguson in the box leaving Unsworth with the responsibility of the penalty. The Everton defender had no problems as he slammed the ball home to pull the game back level for the second time. It wasn't over there as Liverpool had one more chance to take the three points. Having been awarded a free kick mid way in the Everton half, four minutes into stoppage time, Gary McAllister took aim and hit a stunning effort from 40 yards, deceiving Paul Gerrard in goal to cap off an amazing afternoon on Merseyside.

Capital One Cup: Fourth Round Draw

The newly named Capital One Cup continued this week as we saw the third round of the competition take place. This round saw the remaining seven Premier League clubs enter the fray including current holders Liverpool and Premier League winners Manchester City.

It was City though, who surprised everyone as they were beaten 4-2 at home by Aston Villa after extra time at the Etihad Stadium. Roberto Mancini fielded a strong side which included Kolo Toure, Jack Rodwell, Mario Balotelli and Carlos Tevez. It was the Italian striker that opened the scoring in the game after an excellent through pass from James Milner. It was another former Villa man in the City line up, Gareth Barry, who scored a deserved equaliser for Villa as he put through his own net after good work down the right from Andreas Weimann. An Aleksander Kolarov free kick and a Gabby Agbonlahor goal in the second half, saw the game go to extra time. It was Villa though, who took the initiative in extra time as goals from Charlies N'Zogbia and Gabby Agbonlahor gave Paul Lambert and his Villa side a surprise victory away from home.

Another shock in the third round of the competition came at Elland Road as Championship outfit Leeds United beat high flying Everton 2-1. The game was largely dominated by Leeds who could have easily scored more. They opened the scoring in the first half as Aidan White was given time and space to beautifully curl home. David Moyes fielded a strong line up which included Steven Pienaar and his side should have been level when Steven Naismith headed wide from 3 yards. Leeds effectively ended the game in the second half as midfielder Rodolph Austin flicked home after a well worked free kick from the left. A late Sylvain Distin header made an exciting end to the game but the Premier League team were unable to take the game to extra time.

Having beaten Stoke in the last round, Swindon were at it again causing another upset beating Championship team Burnley 3-1 at home. They were joined in the fourth round by Bradford, who came down from two goals down at home to Burton to win the all League Two clash 3-2 after extra time. Arsenal and Chelsea set up their Premier League clash beautifully on Saturday, as they both hit their opponents for six. The Gunners faced League One Coventry City at home and two goals for Theo Walcott and a first goal for Olivier Giroud, saw Arsene Wenger's side came out 6-1 winners. Chelsea fielded a strong side against Wolves and that was evident as they beat the Championship club 6-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Current holders of the cup Liverpool, faced a tricky tie away at West Brom who beat them on the opening day of the league season 3-0. Brendan Rogers young outfit though came away 2-1 winners thanks to two goals from Nuri Sahin. Tottenham, Southampton and Sunderland all eased past lower league opposition and were joined by Man United who came out top against Newcastle United.

As the competition progresses nicely, the fourth round draw was made immediately after the third round and threw up Chelsea v Man United in the tie of the round. Arsenal face a tough tie away at Reading, while holders Liverpool are at home to Swansea which will see Brendan Rogers come up against his former team. Aston Villas reward for beating Man City is a tricky tie away at League One Swindon Town. Bradford are the lowest league side left in the competition and will travel to Wigan, whilst Sunderland will face north east rivals Middlesbrough.

All ties will be played the week commencing the 29th October 2012.

England: JT retires, but who will replace him at the back?

With Chelsea captain and centre back John Terry having controversially retired on Sunday, England have lost one of their key members of their back four. Despite the shock decision, the World Cup is still two years away, leaving national manager Roy Hodgson time to find an ideal replacement. We have listed the potential candidates who can fill the gap, and become central to the heart of the England back line.

Gary Cahill: (Chelsea)
Caps: 10 Goals: 2

Former Bolton defender Gary Cahill is Terry's team mate at Chelsea and has been unlucky with his opportunities in the national set up. The 26 year old joined the London team last January and finished the season with a Champions League and FA Cup final medal. Cahill fitted in the Chelsea team quickly and became a regular fixture alongside Terry in their back four towards the end of last year. In England's recent World Cup qualifier against Ukraine, Cahill was overlooked by Roy Hodgson, who selected Everton's Phil Jagielka ahead of the Chelsea man. Having suffered a jaw injury before the Euros last June, Cahill was unlucky to miss out on travelling to the tournament. But with him likely to face Champions League opposition with Chelsea this season, Hodgson may favour Cahill ahead of Jagielka in the upcoming qualifiers.

Phil Jagielka: (Everton)
Caps: 14 Goals: 1

Everton centre back Phil Jagielka will be keen to claim the gap left in the England defence by John Terry. Jagielka was chosen ahead of Gary Cahill in the recent qualifier against Ukraine and also featured and scored in the summer friendly with Italy. Having played together with Joleon Lescott when the Man City defender was at Everton, Roy Hodgson may be tempted to choose Jagielka ahead of Cahill. The two have played together for England four times on which they have come out winners on all occasions. Both centre backs look set to be regular fixtures for their club this season, and having forged a partnership at Everton, this partnership at the back could well be the future for the Three Lions.

Joleon Lescott: (Manchester City)
Caps: 23 Goals: 1

Lescott has established himself as Terry's partner in the England defence and has been a regular feature in Roy Hodgson's games. The former Everton defender is almost a definite starter in England's World Cup qualifying campaign over the next two years, but the question is, who will partner the Man City defender? Lescott partnered Terry at every game in the European Championships, including scoring England's first goal of the tournament against France in the group stages. He was involved heavily in City's title winning season last year alongside Vincent Kompany, but with the side leaking goals early on this year, Lescott's performances will need to improve if he is to be a dead cert in the England side.

Chris Smalling: (Manchester United)

Despite only managing three England caps to his name, Chris Smalling certainly has a bright future wearing the national shirt. Smalling is currently injured, and is working his way back to full fitness. The former Fulham defender has two solid seasons behind him for United in the top league, and his versatility is key to his inclusion in the national set up. As well as being able at centre back, Smalling has featured at right back at Old Trafford and will be just as reliable there as he is in the centre. Smalling's only appearances for England came at the end of the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign under Fabio Capello. Smalling also has plenty of experience at U21 level and will certainly feature for England again when back to full match fitness.

Phil Jones: (Manchester United)

Just like club team mate Chris Smalling, Phil Jones is another useful defender to have in the national squad. At only 20 years old, Jones was involved in the European qualifying campaign and was also taken to the finals by Hodgson where he played no part. Jones has been used mainly at right back for United but is also able to play in central defence and even in midfield where he played whilst at Blackburn. His tireless box to box runs and attacking threat makes him a dead cert to be involved in Hodgson's squads in the near future.

Capital One Cup: Third Round Draw

Having witnessed many upsets in the first round, the Capital One Cup the theme of David beating Goliath continued in the second round of the competition.

The second stage saw the entrance of 13 Premier League sides with only Fulham and Stoke City failing to progress. The Cottagers were beaten 1-0 away to Sheffield Wednesday thanks to a Gary Madine penalty whilst Stoke were beaten at home by Swindon Town in extra time 4-3. The League One side had gone into half time two goals to the good, but were pegged back in the second half after Jonathan Walters and Kenwyne Jones had made the game level. Despite throwing away the lead, Swindon's James Collins grabbed a late winner in extra time to take Paolo Di Canio's men to the third round where they will play Burnley. 

The upsets continuted in the second round with plenty of Championship clubs falling victim to lower league opposition. The most notable game involved Leicester City who were comfortably beaten 4-2 at home to League Two side Burton Albion. Midlands rivals Birmingham City and Coventry went head to head, and it was the Sky Blues who came out on top beating their opponents 3-2 after extra time. Both Blackburn and Bolton were knocked out after both sides were beaten away to League One opposition. Blackburn were beaten 2-1 by MK Dons whilst Bolton came away from Crawley also losing 2-1. 

With the third round upon us already, the remaining seven Premier League sides enter the competition. Winners from last year Liverpool will travel to West Brom who comfortably beat them 3-0 on the opening day of the season. Coventry's reward for beating Birmingham in the last round is a trip to the Emirates where they will face Arsenal. Both Manchester clubs both have home fixtures in the third round with United facing a tricky test against Newcastle United. Rivals City have a slightly easier task as they come up against Paul Lambert and Aston Villa. 

Having comfortably come through their second round tie against Leyton Orient, Everton face a difficult game as they travel to Championship side Leeds United. The Toffee's came away 5-0 winners in their second round game, and have got off to a flyer in the league. Neil Warnock's men have also had a good start in the Championship having taken seven points from their first four games. 

All ties will be played the week commencing the 24th September 2012.

Capital One Cup: Second Round Draw

As the football season begins to get into full swing, eyes drew to the second round of the Capital One Cup. The first round games threw up some cracking games and some excellent entertainment. Seven Championship teams fell at the first hurdle with last years runners up Cardiff losing to League Two side Northampton Town the shock of the round. Derby were involved in a ten goal thriller at Pride Park which ended 5-5 after extra time. Their opponents Scunthorpe came out the eventual winners 7-6 on penalties and will face Norwich in the second round.

Other Championship casualties included Brighton, who were well beaten 3-0 by Paolo Di Canio's Swindon Town. Paul Benson struck early on in the second half for the Robins, and an Alan Navarro brace soon after booked them a second round tie against Premier League side Stoke City. Bristol City also crashed out losing 2-1 to League Two side Gillingham Town at Ashton Gate. 

Relegated side Wolverhampton Wanderers needed a penalty shoot out to get past Aldershot Town at Molineux. Michel Rankine had cancelled out a Sylvain Ebanks Blake goal in the second half and after the first 13 penalty kicks had been successful, Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme kept out Jordan Robert's penalty to give the Championship side a second round tie away at Northampton Town.

All Premier League sides come into the second round bar the clubs competing in Europe meaning there are 13 top flight clubs playing for a third round tie. Everton are involved in one of the stand out games playing at home to League One side Leyton Orient. Morecambe's reward for dumping Blackpool out of the cup, is a trip to the North East where they will play Sunderland. 

Both Wigan and Fulham will have to play to their best if they are progress as they both travel to a Championship club. Having been dumped out of FA Cup by Swindon last season, Wigan face a tough task in playing Nottingham Forest. Fulham face newly promoted Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

2012/13 Premier League: Star Games Part 1

With the season only a week away we have looked at the stand out games and the derbies throughout the season. Brief Info: Newcastle finished above their opponents last season after an excellent season. Alan Pardew's men came out on top in the recent encounter, thanks to two excellent goals from Papiss Cisse. Chelsea meanwhile, have new recruits with Edin Hazard and Oscar drafted in meaning Newcastle will be in for a tough game.

26/08/12: Liverpool v Manchester City

Brief Info: Liverpool were battered 3-0 in the most recent fixture between these teams back in January. The last time the Reds tasted victory against City was in the 2012/11 season when Andy Carroll notched his first goals for his new club in a 3-0 win at Anfield. City bagged a draw the last time they faced Liverpool in the league but if Brendan Rogers side are to get back in the Champions League then they will need to be beating the likes of City.

Brief Info: An excellent double from captain Robin Van Persie meant that Arsenal came away with all three points at Anfield last time out. The win was the first time Arsenal had claimed a win since 2009. The two clubs love a draw and have managed six of them in the last ten games.

Brief Info: One of the biggest games of the season. Liverpool v Man United at Anfield is always a huge occasion and always contains big controversy. Last season saw Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra spark a racism war dominating last season's fixture. The game ended all sqaure at Anfield and United came on top in the affair at Old Trafford thanks to a Wayne Rooney double.

Interesting stat: In the history of the fixture there have been 157 league games between the clubs. Man United are ahead winning 61, Liverpool have won 53 and there have been 43 draws.

23/09/12: Man City v Arsenal

Brief Info: This fixture has always been a tight affair with the fact that in the past five league meetings there have only been five goals scored. Arsenal came out on top in the recent game thanks to a Mikel Arteta goal. City have a number of former Gunners in the side, Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy the most recent to make the move. Striker Emmanuel Adebayor was the last player to have played for both sides and score in the fixture. The striker signed for City from Arsenal before scoring a header for City in a 4-2 win against Arsenal back in 2009.

29/09/12: Arsenal v Chelsea

Brief Info: The recent 0-0 between the clubs was the first goal less draw since 2005. The tie has always contained goals and the game at Stamford Bridge last season certainly showed that. With Chelsea leading 2-1 at half time, captain Robin Van Persie inspired a great comeback with a superb hat trick meaning Arsenal came away 5-3 winners.

Interesting stat: Robin Van Persie's recent hat trick against Chelsea was the second hat trick scored by an Arsenal forward against Chelsea. The other one was Nwankwo Kanu who notched three goals in a 3-2 win back in 1999.

29/09/12: Man Utd v Tottenham

Brief Info: Spurs have not had much luck against United having not taken three points from them since 2001. In total, since the beginning of the Premier League, Spurs have only ever won three league games and drawn just the eight. Spurs could and should have had one more win under their belt after a Pedro Mendes lob had clearly gone over the line, only for the officials to think otherwise.

07/10/12: Newcastle v Man United

Brief Info: Like Spurs, Newcastle also struggle to win against United. The 3-0 win at St James Park last season was a result that matched there season where they finished an impressive fifth. Goals have been aplenty in the tie seeing 25 goals scored in the last eight league meetings.

20/10/12: Tottenham v Chelsea

Brief Info: This London derby is one of the biggest of the season. The tie this season sees Spurs boss Andre Villas Boas come up against his former team who he struggled with so much last year. The most recent tie between the clubs came in the FA Cup semi final where Chelsea came out an incredible 5-1 winners.

21/10/12: Sunderland v Newcastle

Brief Info: There were nine yellow cards in the last game between the sides. The Tyne-Wear derby is one of the most hotly contested games. Newcastle have come out the better side for the majority of the last ten games, with Sunderland only managing one win in the last ten, a 2-1 win back in 2008.

27/10/12: Everton v Liverpool

Brief Info: The Merseyside derby has been one of the most competitive derbies in the Premier League for a long time. The city of Liverpool has been consistently dominated by the red side who have won seven of the last ten games between the two. An excellent Steven Gerrard hat trick was the difference in the last game as Everton continued their long wait for a win at Anfield.

2012/13: Premier League Preview Part 1

Only a week away, the new Premier League season is upon us. After a mesmerizing season last year, we are certainly in store for another memorable year of football. In our first of two posts, we look at each of the clubs in the league, rate their chances, and look at the transfer activity they have been doing over the past couple of months.

Arsenal: 
Arsenal's pre season has been dominated by the everlasting story of captain Robin Van Persie's eagerness to move away from the North London club. As of yet, he is still a Gunner but has recently been linked with a move away to Manchester United. Rivals City have already ruled out a move for the forward, so Old Trafford looks the likely destination for the Dutchman. The Gunner's finished third last season ahead of rivals Spurs so will once again play Champions League football in what will be their 21st season in the Premier League. Manager Arsene Wenger has been busy in the transfer market bringing in two strikers to the team. German striker Lukas Podolski and Frenchman Olivier Giroud have been joined by Spanish playmaker Santi Cazorla totalling nearly £40 million between the three.

Prediction: 4th

Aston Villa:

Villa had a frustrating season last year, narrowly avoiding relegation finishing 16th only two points away from Bolton who were relegated on the final day last season. Manager Alex McLeish was sacked soon after the season finished with former Norwich man Paul Lambert the replacement. Lambert kept the Canaries in the division last year and impressed fans with the excellent performances taking points away from Liverpool and Tottenham away from home. So far he has brought in a number of players including Dutch defender Ron Vlaar and Moroccan Karim El Ahmadi. The key for Villa is to keep main man Darren Bent who picked up an injury last year. But if he is given the service then goals shouldn't be an issue with Bent upfront.

Prediction: 14th

Chelsea:

Roberto Di Matteo ended last season winning both the Champions League and the FA Cup as the caretaker boss. He was rewarded with the permanent position at the end of the season after his success, and will want to build on that in the coming season. Talisman Didier Drogba left Chelsea on a high scoring in the FA Cup final and the winning penalty in the Champions League. His role has been left for Fernando Torres, who started to show small signs of promise at the end of the season. Roman Abramovich has invested big money already in players with Edin Hazard and Oscar brought in, both for mammoth fees. Under Di Matteo, Chelsea fans will expect big things this year, and with another couple of signings, they will be definitely challenging for a place in the top four at the end of the season. 

Prediction: 3rd

Everton:

Everton finished above rivals Liverpool for only the second time in the last ten years. Despite losing both derby games to them, David Moyes guided his side to a very respectable seventh. The astute signing of Croatian Nikica Jelavic meant that goalscoring wasn't an issue and with his contribution of 11 goals in the second half of the season, meant his side finished strongly. The loan signing too of Steven Pienaar also was another key move by Moyes and after signing permanently for the forthcoming season, the South African will be a central role to their attacking moves. Australian Tim Cahill has moved on after 8 years of excellent service moving to the American league where he will play for New York Red Bulls. 

Prediction: 8th

Fulham: 

Fulham are unbeaten in their pre season winning four and drawing two of their six games. Martin Jol took the club to a ninth place finish last season after he was given the manager's job at the beginning of the season taking over from Mark Hughes. The goals from Clint Dempsey were a massive factor in their final place after he scored an excellent 16 goals from midfield. The American has been linked with Liverpool throughout the summer but as of yet he will remain a Fulham player. Jol has brought in three players so far with Hugo Rodallega moving on a free from Wigan the most notable move. After a successful loan spell in the second half of last season, forward Pavel Pogrebnyak moved onto fellow Premier League side Reading. Captain Danny Murphy also moved on as he went to Championship side Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer. 

Prediction: 10th

Liverpool:

Despite winning the League Cup, Liverpool suffered another poor season finishing in a dismal eight place. But with a new manager Brendan Rogers in place, Liverpool fans will have high hopes for the coming season. Rogers Swansea side impressed everyone last year with their style of football, and if Liverpool can begin to play a similar way, then they will be ones to watch. So far Rogers has brought in two former Swans with striker Fabio Borini arriving from Roma, and midfield man Joe Allen joining from Swansea. Frontman Andy Carroll has made many a headline this year and has been rumoured to be on his way out from Anfield. The former Newcastle man showed signs of his former self at the end of last year, but may struggle to make the first eleven this season meaning his future may be elsewhere. 

Prediction: 5th

Manchester City:

The reigning champions are the only Premier League side yet to bring anyone in during the current transfer window. Roberto Mancini's side have been relatively quiet as they prepare for their opening game against newly promoted Southampton. City won the league in the final minute of the season last year thanks to a late Sergio Aguero goal. They battled with their rivals Man United throughout the season, and despite doing the double over their rivals, United were continuously on their tails. City will go into the season as favourites led by captain Vincent Kompany who recently signed a new long term deal with the club. Bad boy Mario Balotelli shined at Euro 2012 and if he can avoid getting into any trouble this year, the Italian will be dangerous to teams who come up against him. With the return of Carlos Tevez last season, City's strike force were a real threat to defences and the club were the top goal scorers in the league mastering a huge 93 goals. 

Prediction: 1st

Manchester United:

Manchester United will go into their 38th consecutive season in the top flight. After narrowly missing out on the title last year, they will be looking to make it 20 Premier League titles edging further away from Liverpool's 18. Sir Alex Ferguson has brought in only the two players so far in the transfer window with playmaker Shinji Kagawa making the move from Borussia Dortmund and youngster Nick Powell making the step up from Crewe Alexandra. Ferguson has also stated his desire to bring in Arsenal frontman Robin Van Persie, and after rivals City ruled out a move for him, Old Trafford looks like his preferred destination. If he makes the move, he will link up with Wayne Rooney who scored an impressive 27 league goals last year, just three behind the Arsenal man.  

Prediction: 2nd

Newcastle United:

Alan Pardew was rightly awarded manager of the year last season after guiding Newcastle to an excellent fifth place in the league. The signings of Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse proved to be a master stroke by Pardew with the pair scoring 29 league goals between them. United registered league wins against both Manchester United and Liverpool at home making the Sports Direct Arena a fortress to play in. Following last season will be a big task for Newcastle. Pardew has Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa alongside his strike force and they will be key to creating the chances up front. Gael Bigirimana has made the move to the club after impressing for Championship side Coventry City last season. He has been joined by defender Curtis Good and midfielder Roman Amalfitano so far, and more signings are expected to arrive at the Magpies before the window closes. 

Prediction: 7th

Norwich City:

Norwich City made the giant leap straight from the Championship two seasons ago having gained automatic promotion. Finishing in 12th position last year, the Canaries impressed throughout the season under boss Paul Lambert. Due to this success Lambert was snapped up by Aston Villa leaving Norwich with former Birmingham City man Chris Hughton at the helm. With a new boss, striker Grant Holt made the decision to remain at the club having before made a transfer request at the end of the season. Holt's 15 league goals made him the second highest English goalscorer behind Wayne Rooney last season. Hughton has made some excellent signings so far bringing in defender Michael Turner from Sunderland as well as the impressive Robert Snodgrass, who made the move from Leeds United. 

Prediction: 15th

England: Euro 2012 squad announced

After much discussion and many opinions on who would get the call to the England squad, new manager Roy Hodgson finally announced his 23 man squad for the Euros today. The main talking point that arises from the squad is the exclusion of defender Rio Ferdinand who misses out. Other notable exclusions include Man City defender Micah Richards as well as strikers Darren Bent and Peter Crouch who were rumoured to be given the nod.

Goalkeeper John Ruddy and Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are the two players included who are uncapped and are inclusions that have been praised amongst both media and fans. Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has been named as captain for the tournament by Hodgson, a welcome choice and a decision many expected. With two warm up games ahead, Hodgson will want to begin noting down a starting eleven for the tournament which will begin for England on the 11th June where they face France in their first group game.

We take a look at the 23 man squad that will represent England at Euro 2012:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Man City), Robert Green (West Ham United), John Ruddy (Norwich City)

Norwich shot stopper John Ruddy is the stand out choice by Roy Hodgson, but a selection that has been merited by Ruddy's excellent displays for the Canaries this season. He played every Premier League game bar one for Norwich this year which included two clean sheets. He is joined in the squad by Joe Hart and Rob Green who have both had excellent seasons for their respective clubs. Hart has grown into the number one spot for England and is by far the best English goalkeeper between the sticks at the moment. The Manchester City keeper played in every Premier League game this season in helping them achieve the league title for the first time in 44 years. Second choice keeper Rob Green has bounced back well since his error in the World Cup two years ago and has had guided West Ham to the Championship play off final with an impressive 17 clean sheets. 

Defenders: Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Man Utd), John Terry (Chelsea), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Joleon Lescott (Man City), Leighton Baines (Everton), Ashley Cole (Chelsea)

Only the seven defenders have been included in the squad which includes the absence of Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand. The centre back is a surprise omission from the squad which includes Chelsea captain John Terry. The former England captain's inclusion is the reason many thought Ferdinand wasn't but in his press conference, Hodgson explained the decision was purely based on football. Terry is joined by fellow club team mates Gary Cahill and Ashley Cole who were expected to be included. Liverpool right back Glen Johnson has also been selected and is thought to be chosen as England's number one right back. Johnson was thought to be joined by Spurs right back Kyle Walker, but a toe injury meant the defender misses out after having an excellent season for the London club. Instead Hodgson has included flexible defender Phil Jones who was selected ahead of Man City right back Micah Richards. Richards will be disappointed not to be selected after having a good season at the Etihad playing 29 games contributing 5 assists. Everton left back Leighton Baines and Man City defender Joleon Lescott have also been including making up the rest of the defenders selected. 

Midfielders: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Ashley Young (Man Utd), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Gareth Barry (Man City), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Scott Parker (Tottenham Hotspur)

Arsenal youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been rewarded with a call up to the squad after an impressive season at the Emirates. The 18-year old is the stand out selection in the midfield which also includes Liverpool winger Stewart Downing. Having played 36 games this season at Anfield, Downing ended having not registered a goal or assist. The selection is one that is a surprise considering the poor season the former Villa player has had. He is joined by team mate Steven Gerrard who has been selected as captain for the tournament. Gerrard captained England at their last major tournament two years ago at the World Cup where they fell to the Germans in a controversial quarter final. Despite suffering from an achilles injury, Spurs midfielder Scott Parker has been selected and after having an injection, Parker is expected to be fit for the tournament. Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has been included after a good season with The Gunners. Walcott ended the season with eight goals and eight assists and is no stranger to the England set up having been selected in the 2006 World Cup squad by former boss Sven Goran Eriksson. Ashley Young, Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry have all been selected making up the rest of the midfield. 

Strikers: Andy Carroll (Liverpool), Wayne Rooney (Man Utd), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur), Danny Welbeck (Man Utd)

With Wayne Rooney having to miss the first two games through suspension, it will be up to the remaining three strikers to make sure they score the goals. Rooney was sent off in England's last qualifying game in October against Montenegro which ruled him out for the first three games. However this ban was shortened to two games meaning Rooney will be available for the final group game against Ukraine. Club team mate Danny Welbeck has been selected by Hodgson having impressed throughout the season while partnering Rooney up front at United. Welbeck finished the season with nine goals. Liverpool front man Andy Carroll has also been included having finished the season strongly at Anfield. Rumour had it that Stoke forward Peter Crouch may have got the nod, but Carroll's strength and power seemed to be the reason Hodgson is taking the Geordie instead. Jermain Defoe is the final striker chosen in the squad having scored eleven goals this season, the majority from the Spurs bench.

FA Cup Semi Finals: Preview

Before I get onto previewing this weekends fixtures, just a note of apology for lack of posts recently, I have been very busy with uni work and working at Peterborough United as well. I am now back and have several posts in mind that shall be published in the coming months. Thanks!

As we come to the end of what has been another terrific season, we focus our attention to the semi finals of the FA Cup this weekend. We have two cracking derbies this year that sees the two games both played at the home of football, Wembley. League Cup winners Liverpool are aiming for a second trophy of the season and they take on local rivals Everton. In the other game we see a London derby between Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

#1 Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur

A London derby that sees two of the Premier League big boys come head to head in a fight for a place in the FA Cup final in May. Chelsea have become revitalised under the management of Roberto Di Matteo whereas Spurs have had a tricky spell recently that sees them now fighting for a Champions League place. Harry Redknapp's men were seen as title contenders 4 months ago but a poor 2012 has seen their rivals Arsenal leap frog them in the table. A recent home defeat to Norwich City in the league has really dented Spurs chances of a top four place and a cup semi final against Chelsea is a welcome distraction for them. Winger Gareth Bale has recently seen a drop in form after a stunning start to the season for the Welshman. Striker Louis Saha is cup tied which will mean Jermain Defoe is likely to partner fellow forward Emmanuel Adebayor in attack. The Englishman has not played that much this season but has always impressed when he has been given the opportunity. Rivals Chelsea have begun to show what a good side they are after the sacking of former boss Andre Villas Boas. Caretaker boss Roberto Di Matteo has guided the Blues to a Champions League semi final as well as a good chance of taking the final Champions League place in the league. Striker Fernando Torres has started to look like his old self with excellent performances in recent games.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Spurs

#Liverpool v Everton

With the anniversary of Hillsborough on Sunday, this weekend is massive for the red half of Liverpool. Kenny Dalglish's side have been under a lot of criticism this season with average performances from his side. Poor results have seen his side sit eighth in the league behind local rivals Everton. Striker Andy Carroll scored only his ninth goal for the reds this week in the away win at Blackburn. Carroll has also been criticised for not proving his £35 million price tag this year but with good performances recently, the striker is sure to show what he is capable of. Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard were rested in mid week meaning the pair, who have been so vital this year, will be fresh and ready for the challenge on Saturday lunchtime. Goalkeepers Pepe Reina and Doni are both suspended the game which will see third choice keeper Brad Jones called up between the sticks. The Australian made only his third appearance for the club on Wednesday saving a penalty in the process. David Moyes' Everton are the in form side at the moment having only lost none of their previous seven games. The Toffees will be without cup tied Steven Pienaar, but with striker Nikica Jelavic in good form the blue side of Merseyside will fancy their chances against an inconsistent Liverpool side. 

Prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Everton
